Students participating in NEET UG Counselling 2026 have been waiting for an important update from the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC).
The Round 1 choice locking facility, which was expected to become available on August 12, has not yet opened. As of August 13, 2026, MCC has officially informed candidates that choice locking has not started and that the revised time will be announced shortly. Candidates have been advised to keep checking the MCC website for the latest update.
For students and parents, the delay may naturally create some uncertainty. But the most important thing right now is not to panic or make rushed changes to your college preference list.
At VVT Coaching Chennai, our advice to NEET aspirants is simple: use this additional time to carefully review your choices, understand your realistic admission possibilities and make sure your preference order reflects the colleges you genuinely want.

According to the latest update displayed on the official MCC UG counselling portal, choice locking has not started yet.
MCC has stated that the time for activating the choice locking facility will be announced soon and has asked candidates to remain in touch with the official website.
The Round 1 counselling process is being conducted for admission to MBBS, BDS and other eligible undergraduate medical seats covered under MCC counselling.
MCC’s website is also currently carrying the Round 1 seat matrix, the UG Information Bulletin 2026 and the official AIQ counselling schedule for candidates.
| Counselling Activity | Current Status |
| NEET UG 2026 Round 1 | In progress |
| Choice Filling | Candidates should check the MCC portal for current access/status |
| Choice Locking | Not started as of August 13, 2026 |
| Revised Locking Time | To be announced by MCC |

Students should treat the MCC website not social media forwards, WhatsApp messages or unofficial screenshots as the final authority for any revised deadline.

MCC has not announced a specific reason for the present delay in activating choice locking on its latest public update.
The original schedule had indicated an earlier locking window, but students attempting to access the facility found that it had not become available.
The most important point is that candidates should not speculate about the reason or assume that counselling has been cancelled or indefinitely postponed.
MCC’s official message simply says that choice locking is yet to begin and the timing will be announced shortly.
Until a revised notification appears, students should continue preparing their preference list normally.

This distinction is extremely important.
Many students use the terms “choice filling” and “choice locking” interchangeably, but they refer to different stages.
During choice filling, candidates select the colleges and courses they want to be considered for.
You can arrange the options according to your preference for example:
The order matters because the counselling system considers your submitted preference order along with eligibility, NEET rank, reservation rules and seat availability while processing allotment.
Choice locking is the stage where you confirm the final version of your submitted preferences.
Once the choices are finally locked according to the applicable MCC process, students should regard that preference order as their final Round 1 decision.
That is why VVT Coaching strongly advises students not to arrange colleges simply according to last year’s cut off or someone else’s preference list.
Your preference list should reflect where you actually want to study.
Until MCC activates the locking window, VVT Coaching recommends completing this checklist:
Do not wait until the final few minutes after the locking facility opens to review everything.
Every year, counselling decisions become stressful because students focus heavily on getting a seat but not enough on arranging their choices correctly.
Avoid these mistakes.
Restricting your list unnecessarily can reduce the number of options available for consideration.
Do not place a college above another institution unless you would genuinely prefer it.
This is particularly important when considering private and deemed universities.
Their rank, category, budget and priorities may be completely different from yours.
Study trends across multiple counselling rounds and, where possible, multiple years rather than treating one closing rank as a fixed prediction.
A rushed drag and drop change can completely alter the sequence of your preferences.
Always review your list from top to bottom before final confirmation.
