Every NEET aspirant asks this question at some point: What will be the NEET 2026 cut off for government colleges?
It is the right question, but students often ask it at the wrong time and in the wrong way. As of 13 April 2026, the official NEET UG 2026 exam is scheduled for 3 May 2026, and the NEET website says the result will be announced later. That means the official 2026 government-college cutoff has not been released yet. The current MCC UG counselling page is still running session 2025, not 2026.
So the honest way to write this blog is not to pretend the final 2026 cutoff is already known. The useful way is to explain:
This needs to be said clearly.
NEET UG 2026 has not been conducted yet, and the official website says the result declaration is still to be announced. Since admission cut-offs for government colleges come only after the result and counselling rounds, any 2026 number you see right now is only an estimate, not an official cut-off. MCC’s UG page also shows that the live counselling workflow is still for 2025 session activity.
So if a blog claims “the official 2026 government college cutoff is X marks,” that is not accurate as of today.

This is where most confusion starts.
This is the minimum percentile/score range needed to become NEET-qualified and eligible for counselling. VVT’s current NEET cutoff explainer correctly separates this from admission cutoff and notes that the percentile rule stays fixed while the marks range changes every year.
This is the actual closing score or closing rank at which a government medical college seat gets filled in counselling. This is always much higher than the basic qualifying cutoff and depends on the college, category, quota, state, and counselling round. That is why a student can qualify NEET but still be far away from a government college.
The government-college cutoff is not one national number. It changes based on several factors.
The biggest ones are:
This matters because government-college admission in India is split across different systems. The DGHS Medical Education page states that 15% All India Quota seats in participating government medical and dental colleges are allotted under the AIQ scheme, while state-side admission processes handle the rest according to their rules. MCC also states that it conducts UG counselling for All India Quota seats and several central/institutional categories.
So when students say “government college cut-off,” they are often combining AIQ government cut-off and state-quota government cut off, which are not the same thing.
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said in December 2025 that MBBS seats have grown to over 1.28 lakh nationally and that the government plans to add even more seats by 2029. That is an important long-term expansion signal. But students should not assume that this automatically makes government college cut-off’s easy. Government seats are still highly quota driven and far more competitive than simply “qualifying NEET.”
Since the official 2026 cutoff is not out yet, the best practical way to guide students is to use safe-score planning ranges, not fake certainty.
The NEET 2026 expected cut-off for MBBS seats is an estimate based on factors such as previous-year trends, exam difficulty level, number of candidates, and seat availability. Students should understand that there are two different cut-off levels in NEET.
| NEET MBBS Cut-off Government Colleges | ||
| Category | NEET 2026 Qualifying Percentile | NEET 2026 Cut-off Marks |
| UR/EWS | 50th percentile | 686-144 |
| OBC | 40th percentile | 143-113 |
| SC | 40th percentile | 143-113 |
| ST | 40th percentile | 143-113 |
| UR/EWS-PwD | 45th percentile | 143-127 |
| OBC-PwD | 40th percentile | 126-113 |
| SC-PwD | 40th percentile | 126-113 |
| ST-PwD | 40th percentile | 126-113 |
The safe score for NEET 2026 government college admission is not the same for every student. It changes based on factors such as category, quota, state, and target course. In simple terms, a safe score means the approximate mark range a student should aim for to stay competitively placed for government seats.
| NEET UG 2026 Safe Score Category Wise | |||
| Category | MBBS Safe Score (Govt) | BDS Safe Score (Govt) | Private College Safe Score |
| General | 610+ | 480+ | 450+ |
| OBC | 590+ | 460+ | 420+ |
| SC | 520+ | 430+ | 380+ |
| ST | 490+ | 400+ | 350+ |
Looking at the previous years’ NEET cutoff trends helps students understand how scores have moved over time and how competition has changed. It gives a clearer picture of the mark ranges that have been relevant for government college admissions in earlier years.
| Previous Year NEET Cut Off Trend | ||
| Year | General (UR) Cut Off | OBC/SC/ST Cut Off |
| 2025 | 686 – 144 | 143 – 113 |

This is one of the biggest reasons cutoffs look confusing online.
Under the current government framework:
That means:
Recent counselling summaries and planning guides broadly place AIQ government MBBS in a much tougher bracket than simple qualification, with UR/EWS often needing a significantly higher score than the basic NEET pass line, and category wise targets moving lower but still staying competitive. Trend-based 2025 summaries also show that top government colleges close at much stronger ranks than ordinary government-college pools. These are useful planning references, but they are still trend references, not official 2026 cut-off’s.
In NEET, students do not miss government college seats only because they “did not study enough.” Many students miss those targets because their preparation is not converted into a stable score. Many students stay stuck in the same mock-score range for months. Others keep losing marks through repeated errors. A few improve in one subject while quietly slipping in another. Many also remain unsure whether they are truly moving toward a realistic government-college target.
That is why at VVT Coaching Chennai, preparation is not treated as syllabus coverage alone. We help students build the kind of score consistency needed for competitive targets like government MBBS admission.
Many students stay below their target score because the same mistakes repeat again and again:
Instead of giving only more random papers, VVT uses Error Exams built from the student’s own recent mistakes.
These include:
Result: students stop losing the same avoidable marks, and that score recovery is often what helps move them closer to realistic government-college cutoff ranges.
One of the biggest problems in NEET preparation is that many students know their total score, but they do not know why it is not moving.
That is why VVT’s AI-powered mock tests do more than give a number. They help students understand:
Result: students do not prepare blindly. They get a clearer picture of how their current score compares to their target and what exactly must improve to push toward government-college admission.
A lot of students aim for a government seat, but not all students need the same path to reach it. One student may be targeting AIQ. One student may depend more on state quota. Another might need a category-based safe-score plan. In some cases, improving just one weak subject can unlock a better counselling range.”
That is where personalised mentoring at VVT helps.
Our mentors guide students on:
Result: students prepare with direction, not confusion, and get a clearer pathway toward a competitive score.
Many students do not stay below government-college targets because they are weak everywhere. Often, the gap comes from small unfinished areas:
VVT’s Remedy Classes are designed to fix these exact score blockers without forcing students to re-study the whole syllabus.
These sessions are:
Result: students reduce hidden weaknesses, improve chapter stability, and convert more preparation into marks that actually matter for counselling outcomes.
Government-college cutoffs are not cleared by effort alone. They are cleared by score stability.
Students usually stay below their target because of:
At VVT Coaching Chennai, the goal is simple: not just to help students study harder, but to help them build the kind of marks that give them stronger options in counselling.
Because in NEET, government-college chances improve when effort is supported by:
That is how VVT Coaching helps convert preparation into a stronger government-college score range.
